In the last half-century, globalization has increased the power and reach of the individual. We now have the ability to reach out and touch the opposite side of the world without leaving our homes. But as our abilities have grown so has our footprint. Globalization has thrust us into interdependence. The change it’s caused has been so sudden and exponential, that we have neglected to adapt.
Today we protect ourselves from the impact of our own lives by relying on guidance from bloated international organizations, outdated political structures, and even more antiquated moral traditions. These methods are failing us.
We must realize that the missing complement to 21st century power and reach is not more regulation, not reliance on the welfare state, not cultural reactivism but rather the cultivation of a 21st century identity, and responsibility. If we are to thrive in this newly interconnected landscape we must shape our culture to those ends.
What globalization has done to our abilities, it is time for us to do to our responsibilities. We must broaden the power and the reach of our ethics.
We believe that it is time to use 21st century tools like, decentralization, aggregate action, and the free flow of information to inform and empower global citizens to take a stake in their world. This democratization of the pursuit for peace, equality and sustainability is not just optimistic rhetoric. it is a means to an end.
We have to get beyond treating the symptoms of violence, inequality and waste. It’s within our power now to begin curing the cause of these old and familiar evils. But we have to start small, we have to work together, and we have to start now.
